Going Nowhere is all about those imaginary treks we take on the road to fitness. Many of us hop on contraptions such as rowing machines, stationary bicycles, treadmills, or elliptical machines which tell us that we've travelled considerable distances even though technically we haven't budged an inch. This is a place to record those treks and encourage each other on what can sometimes be a frustrating experience.
The Five Hundred Posse
Alex just had knee surgery this summer! Now she is very serious about
losing the weight she has gained the past two years and getting back into
the great shape she used to be in prior to her injury. She will be running and biking her way to the big 500!
Distance since August 18: 60.59 miles (21.59 miles running, 39 miles biking)
Angela and her dog, Pepper, will be walking some of her 500 miles together, but she plans on dancing most of the distance.
As of December 4th, she's been 98.62 miles on her dance revolution and 106 Peppertacular miles for a grand total of 204.62 miles!

Aubeneau (the northern couch potatoe) was guilted
into 500 (in the best possible way). See, about a hundred years ago (that'd be net years - like dog years, but more potent) - she began to subliminally
cheer the progress of various Diaryland member's trek to nowhere.
Tragically, this resulted in the human failing of duck envy, so when the tax man gaveth instead of takingeth this year, Aubeneau tempted fate and bought a brand new eliptical machine.
As of May 26, she is 14.5 miles closer to nowhere.
Bev got back on a bike in March of 2002, discovering that it's not true--it *doesn't* come back to you immediately. But she stuck with it and learned she likes it. In 2002 she lost 85 lbs, biked over 1000 miles, and brought her cholesterol from 215 to 145 and she's rather pleased with the change....but has a long way to go.
She's ridden 217.8 miles so far this year as of 2/26...and keeps forgetting to record the miles on the treadmill, but she's very definitely going nowhere fast.
Bibliophilia grew tired of living in a state of lethargy and roundness in the fall of 2003, and set a goal for herself to walk, run, crawl, elliptical train, or stairstep 1000 miles by January 1, 2005.
This will be quite an effort, since although she's a relative youngster, she's not the most physically fit individual you will ever meet. The spectre of reduced roundness and better fitness tempt her enough that she is willing to tie her shoes, leash her dog, and head out.
As of November 24, 2003, she was 22.86 miles along.
Bozoette started on the road to nowhere a little over a year ago, when a bout of viral meningitis laid her low for a solid week. Then, two separate doctors hinted rather broadly that her sleep apnea, high blood pressure, and recurring headaches might be helped if she "lost a little weight".
One year later, she's 75 pounds lighter, off blood pressure meds, off the breathing machine, and walking miles and miles of miles and miles. As of 1/8/03, she's off and walking with a grand total of two!
Bugginyou is currently training for a few adventure races in the Spring (5-8hr races, 50km +/race), and has been logging as many kilometres on her bike as possible. Now that she has a swanky computer for her bike, she has decided to make it her goal to bike 1000km. She is also running a lot more these days, and although doesn't keep track of mileage, keeps track of time, so she is making her running goal 500 hours.
Along with training for adventure races, she currently plays competitive volleyball, soccer, ultimate frisbee and hockey. Very busy girl! She currently keeps a private log of all activity, but feels the need to get her fitness goals out in public to feel she's accountable and won't slack off! Mileage since Sept. 1/03: Biking - 125.3km, Running - 6hr10min.
Carrie was going along just fine on her quest to Nowhere, suddenly got sidetracked/kicked in the teeth by life. Nothing bad! But no working out either. She's gotten back on her bike and back on track, hoping to get as close to Nowhere as possible before the year's out. Update: December 3, 2003: Walking (117 miles so far) and biking (158 miles). Total = 275 miles
and Lips!
Daphne wants to walk 1000 miles this year. She will start out on her treadmill and when it warms up so ice, fog and freezing are no longer a factor, she'll move her walk to the lake.
Before the holidays she was walking at least 4 miles a day, some days 6 or 8 and hopes the group will inspire her to get back to those distances. She loves walking and how it makes her feel. Distance to date: 4.75 miles.
Elaine lost twenty pounds in 2002 by
"walking" approximately 631 miles. (She actually does a combination of
walking on the hills around her house, step aerobics, floor aerobics, and elliptical glider.) This year, she would like to do at least 500 miles in order to keep up her weight loss and energy levels, so she can comfortably pursue her favorite outdoor physical activity: horseback riding.
So far this year: 351 miles as of July 22.
Ella is only a youngster, barely into her twenties, and has therefore decided to sign up for a whopping 1000 miles to nowhere! While she's dreaming the impossible dream of actually meeting this goal, she's also hoping to lose a few pounds along the way. Being the lover of all things chocolate, master of guilty pleasures, and queen of procrastination... this will be a tough challenge!
As of February 15, 2003, she has walked 67 miles total. Only 933 left to go!
Gargy decided to walk 500 Miles to Nowhere for the company. It doesn't seem like nowhere when you're with this lovely group of people.
After a miles-km conversion in early February left him 0.028 miles short of a duck, Gargy became terribly disheartened and fell off the rails. However, he is back in the game (although after so much downtime he's back to taking baby steps!) As of March 24th, he has treaded 11.74km, cycled 60.65km and ellipted 9.66km. That's a total of 72.69km. (or 50.87 miles!) DUCKAGE!
Heather's Mother's Day gift to her mom was the the promise to run half a marathon with her on November 16. Along the way to that she's running a 5k in July, a 10K in late september/early october. update: either Heather is very persuasive, or a good portion of her friends are crazy. Heather and her mom are now being joined by 14 of heather's wonderful friends on the half marathon! She, her dog boogie, and any one or two or three of this running posse can now be seen running through the streets of San Francisco at many an odd hour! The group is now at 4/1 increments for 45 minutes to an hour.
Miles to date: 5/10/03 - 6/12/03: 51 miles run
JC144 read about Marn's resolution, and totally scammed it as one for herself. While she had been laying off the cardio recently, she's back at it, but has decided to shoot for 1000 miles because she's using both the recumbant cycle, and the elliptical cross-trainer.
So far she has travelled 417.12 miles out of the 1000 -- she's 41.71% there folks! Gold star action!
Jenn quit smoking 10 months ago and needs to shed all of those "at least it's not a cigarette in my mouth" pounds. The ultimate goal is to walk 500 miles by the year's end [but I will settle for 300!], and to lose at least 50 lbs.
Since Feb. 5th:
170.2 miles
21 pounds lost...
Kas, once a faithful runner, has decided that after a year of doing nothing she is going the distance. She's going to get up and actually move around on purpose. She is planning to walk atleast 750 miles nowhere by December 1, 2004.
See Kate. See Kate run. Kate hates running. So, Kate swims. Running
gets Kate all hot and gross, so this here chickadee much prefers the
swimming to nowhere. She has been a water baby for a really long time, doing
swim team since she was 9 or so and swimming alone before that. She
left the team when she hit 13ish for reasons unbeknownst to ModernDay Kate
and has recently (June of 2003) delved back into the sport for both for
health and apperance reasons. She swims alone and likes it that way.
And? Since she's an actress, she tends to be a bit long-winded. Forgive.
Distance to date (08/21/03): Swimmers count in yards, but Kate converted to miles for your sake. 10,025 yards...5.69602272 miles. Yah, mon. Over five and a half miles. 1%, kids! One!
Kate's Goal: 1,000,000 yards.
Yards to Go:989,975 yards! Yo ho, me 'earties! YO HO!
Keri has decided to run her 500 miles to nowhere. She has already been walking and running her way to fitness since February of 2003 when she began the quest to lower her cholesterol and blood pressure numbers. This run is dedicated to her husband, who battled (and beat!) a brain tumor in 2001, and is being done in conjunction with a fund-raiser to earn donations (she hopes) for the upcoming Relay for Life by the American Cancer Society in June of 2004. So she plans to complete her 500 miles by 01 June 2004.

Laura is still determined to get the bulk of her 500 MILES by running, but has added the stationary bike in an attempt to catch up. She's traveled 161.82 miles as of September 3rd. Inch little inchworm, inch
Liquid Human is 22 and determined to shape up in 2003. After a brief fall off the fitness bandwagon, she is back and fiesty! Let's kick some bum!She hopes to log her 500 miles through a combination of the EFX machine and aerobics classes at the gym. She even joined the "Hundred Day Club" at the gym with the hopes that the chance to get free stuff will be motivation. Hotsexy bum are belong to me!
Mileage as of March 30th: 38.4 miles. I have a looong way to go.
Marn is old enough to know better, but tragically does not. For 2003 she resolved to try to cover 500 miles (804.5 km) on the elliptical cross training machine. This is just plain crazy talk.
Goal met Nov. 7, and as of now she has covered 558.93 miles (899.5 kilometers) of that distance. No one is more surprised over this than she is.

Mediamaven1 knee is still sore but she is coming along slowly but surely.
MediaMaven1 has finally had time to walk and do her elliptical training in between the four flights of stairs to her new office eight times a day!! She has put in a total of 54 miles as of January 26th. Hope everyone is doing well.
Nacwolin has been working at this fitness thing for over a year now. She runs/walks at the track, the park, and on her treadmill to maintain weight, increase cardio health, and help her tushie defy gravity. She completed her first race, a 5K, on July 4th, and has her sights set on eventually tackling a marathon (yikes)...that is, once she finishes college (that could be years, people!).
As of Dec. 3rd: 511.64 miles (102.3%). I finally did it (on 11/7/03) - woohoo!!
Pati gets on her recumbant bike every morning and also takes her dog on treks to nowhere. Until now she's only logged time and hopes logging distance will be an incentive to go further.
To date she's gone 272.26 miles.
Paula has rowed since 1990, but has only logged her rowing machine (erg) distance since 2001.
When she noticed she was up to 880km on the erg at the end of 2002, she decided to join the Million Meter Club in early 2003 (rowing machine meters only). She also tracked her progress toward 500 miles (804.5 km) combined distance in the boat and on the rowing machine, and is continuing to track total distance after achieving that goal.
Million Meter Goal: Completed March 16, 2003
500 Mile Goal: Completed August 15, 2003.
Total distance for the year: 1321.0 km as of December 16.

Pinkroots doesn't know if it's because she's in the UK or what, but her
air-walkery device doesn't do distance, just strides.
So, she thought just to be different she'd make her mission To Boldly Stride
500,000 of the rascals just to spite her recently diagnosed hypertension. N.B. on hiatus due to seriously ill mum-in law :(
Bold Strides to date (4 Mar) : 21,027
Pischina
used to run when she was freshly divorced. A very sick gallbladder forced her to stop for a few years,
then she took out the gallbladder and got back in shape only to see her house burn down. Pischina is not going to to let things like this stop her again.
She has recently decided that she will run a
50 minute 10K at the March 21, 2004 SJ Mercury News
10K race. She needs to keep her mind on her
training so she needs to post her progress on every
site she can. Also, she is sooo going to get the
T-Shirt.
Miles since November 15: Thirty-six point Four (and don't you worry, she'll make it to fivehundred!)
Rachel has recently bought a GPS receiver and a pedometer, and she's using them as impetus to get off the couch and start walking. She has set her sights high, declaring her commitment to walk 1,000 miles this year, with a long-term goal of walking from the University of Texas
(Austin, TX) to the University of Washington (Seattle, WA) -- 2,386 miles. (Yes, if pressed, she'll probably admit that she's crazy.)
She started January 23rd. As of March 27th, she's walked 120 miles. In a virtual sense, she's walked past Waco, TX. In a literal sense, she's probably been whining the entire way.
Red decided to rejoin the old gym in late May
to "find" herself again. Thanks to a spinal surgery a few years earlier,
she'd become lost in creaky joints and flabby appendages. This twenty-something hopes to do the majority of the 500 miles by power walking and swimming, though isn't opposed to rowing now and again to get her canoeing shoulders back. Miles since June 1st: 37.40
Two years ago Rory rode 500 miles in one week. Then she was inactive for a few years. Suddenly, she found herself in the gym working out on the treadmill, elliptical machines, and the stair climber. Once the weather turned nice (and she got a dog) she ditched the trips to the gym and she walks. A lot. (Well, not as much as she SHOULD, but a lot more than she DID.) She's walking her way towards a better body (and her wedding dress!)
Miles to date: 162.12
Ross used to be a fitness fanatic but then school and work collided with gym time, turning gym time into a burning hunk of twisted metal.
Three months and sixteen shiny new pounds later, with school finished for this term, he's decided to run himself back to sleekness and fitness. His goal: 500 miles on the rowing machine, plus 500 miles on the running machine and 500 miles on the bike. Distance to date:
Since July 2001, Sarah's shed 50 pounds and is battling for more, embracing the fiber, eschewing the fat, and wearing grooves in her treadmill
when it's too cold to hit the park. She's fighting to turn her body into
a lean, mean, producing machine.
While she's been treading the mill for 2 years now, she knows it will be a huge motivator to track her miles as she huffs and puffs her way across the spare bedroom. Addition to the motivation: Sarah's sister-in-law is hiking the Appalachian Trail. There's a map on the wall and Sarah's hiking it with her, though with nowhere near the daily milage. Mileage to date: 45.0
Total of 311.45 miles to nowhere.
Sivatonight is ditching homework and cleaning in an attempt to walk five hundred miles over the course of the year. Thanks to a brand new bike, a fitness center membership and some determination, the grades are plummetting but muscle mass is increasing!
Miles walked so far: 8 on the bike, 10 on foot. Woo!!!!
Splint is really looking forward to going 500 miles to nowhere, accompanied by her trusty and loyal (and way more energetic than she) Tiny Dog. She spent many years on an island, 3 miles long by 1/2 a mile wide, hundreds of miles from anywhere, so she's used to the idea of racking up miles while staying put.
Weekly update: 5/21, my 43rd Birthday: 115.75 miles

Vicki spent many hours last year walking (in an effort to lose weight) and was looking for a repeat this year. Since she only kept track of minutes, rather than miles last year, joining the 500 mile club seemed like a fun way to liven it up a little bit. Keeping track here is fun, and often gives her the motivation to walk just one more minute, to get those miles up. Plus the support here is amazing.
As of November 3rd, she has walked (either on the treadmill or around the neighborhood) 601.02 miles.
