Committed to making 2004 The Year of the Blister

Going Nowhere is all about those imaginary treks we take on the road to fitness.

Many of us hop on contraptions such as rowing machines, stationary bicycles, treadmills, stepping machines or elliptical machines that tell us we've travelled considerable distances even though technically we haven't budged an inch.

This is a place to record those treks and encourage each other on what can sometimes be a frustrating experience.

Nowhere man2Flower joined Weight Watchers over 6 months ago and lost about 15 pounds, but now she's just stuck because she doesn't exercise and has no motivation. She feels joining the posse will motivate her to exercise. She loves the idea of keeping up with the miles and putting the icons on her blog. She has a pedometer and plenty of dogs and kids to walk with up and down her 4/10 mile dirt road if she gets lonely walking.

Miles to date: 108 Yay, 2 duckies!

Nowhere manAja has managed to go from being a mean physically fit machine to complete disaster in only 3 years. Having recently kicked the tobacco habit, she figures it's time to whip herself back into something that at least remotely resembles health. The treadmill will be her weapon of choice for the upcoming 500 miles.

Miles to date: 35.25

Nowhere manAmber, at one time, was of the opinion that she was born to be fluffy. However, now that she has a free gym at college, she's decided that it's time to lose the fluff. She was on a roll in fall of '03, but initiation into an honorary fraternity ate up 6 weeks, and after that she was too lazy to start up again.

However, this year she's going to kick her butt into gear and travel 500 miles to nowhere with the rest of the posse. Most of it will be spent on the elliptical machine, but she also intends to join a group for the Relay For Life this spring.
Miles to date: 33.59 miles

Nowhere manAngela is dancing towards 500 miles again (and walking with Pepper to add to the count).

As of September 12th: Dancin': 32.56 | Dog walkin': 117.5 | Total: 150.06 miles

Nowhere manBabyfishmouth vows that 2004 is the year she really will go from squishy to svelte. Why wait? Her butt's already big enough to serve tea on. She turned 30 in June (ACK! How did THAT happen?) and feels finer than she has since before college. She's aiming for 500 miles on the bike, elliptical machine and, starting on March 22, the treadmill 'cause she never DID find out the length of the weenie pool she swims in.

Miles to date (and avoiding her gym's uniquely cruel first-Monday-of-the-month-free-pizza-extravaganza): 316.46 for the bike, 291.49 for the elliptical machine and 115.6 on the treadmill (don't laugh. I just started on that). That brings her Year of the Blister total to 723.55! And as of 7/27/04, 10 pounds and 8% body fat lost!!! Woohoo! Nowhere manBadsnake: I've walked 139 miles since my last update and broke the 400 mark. In fact, I've got three months and only 78 miles left to reach 500. Wow. Maybe I should try for 650. Walking is much more enjoyable in the fall. Took on some painful plantar fascia aches after walking on the beach a lot during vacation. Ow. New shoes helped. Thanks, Marn, for encouraging so many to do something so simple that improves our health. Miles to date: 422 Half way smooch

nowhere man18 months ago Barbara weighed in at a whopping BIG BUNCHA FAT at her gynecologist's office. She became ill with a grand case of "almost" pneumonia on top of a serious bout of anemia . . . and tadah! lost about 40 pounds. Sept. 18, 2003 Barbara began the 10,000 step program through the local hospital and since then has shed an additional 18,25.5,28, 31.5 36 pounds. (as of 4-29-04) People are beginning to talk - so, now is the time - she is ready, willing and able. She says "I'm a glutton for Marn punishment."

nowhere manAs a teenager, Becca used to take ballet class five days a week and stick her leg behind her head for fun. At twenty-one, overweight and unable to touch the floor, she's decided it's time to get back into shape. Becca plans to plie, tendu and pirrouette her way through 500 miles in 2004! (And now must add: tapping and Irish jigging. It's all about variety.)

nowhere manBones proves to everyone that just because your skinny doesn't mean your physically fit. After having 3 kids and being a couch potato for too many years, she feels it's time to get back into life. She hopes to gain back her energy and flexablily...though pretty gym muscles would be a neat bonus! Since she's starting late in the year, her goal is only 500 miles. Miles to date: 100! nowhere manBrian is tired of looking in the mirror and seeing a different person than he sees in his mind and is now doing something about it. Hopefully this will help him get, and stay, motivated to make a change and not use his job as an excuse anymore. If I can't get back into shape at 25, when can I? Anyone who's interested in my email, just let me know. =)

Nowhere manBugginyou is currently training for a few adventure races in the Spring (5-8hr races, 50km +/race), and has been logging as many kilometres on her bike as possible. Now that she has a swanky computer for her bike, she has decided to make it her goal to bike 1000km. She is also running a lot more these days, and although doesn't keep track of mileage, keeps track of time, so she is making her running goal 500 hours.

Along with training for adventure races, she currently plays competitive volleyball, soccer, ultimate frisbee and hockey. Very busy girl! She currently keeps a private log of all activity, but feels the need to get her fitness goals out in public to feel she's accountable and won't slack off!

Mileage since Sept. 1/03: Biking - 125.3km, Running - 6hr10min.

Nowhere manCabin-Boy has run a gauntlet of health issues over the past three or four years which at the worst point plunged his weight down to around 130. Unfortunately, his body on the rebound decided that it would be more fun to balloon up to a new height of 220 now, provoking him to declare the War On Love-Handle-Overflow (tm), because he really ought to weigh something between those two figures.

He openly blames the multiple surgeries on his digestive tract, but secretly suspects his recent diet of ice cream, hamburgers, and slurpees to be the real culprit. Sitting on his ever-widening backside all day probably isn't helping either. He's joined the Going Nowhere plan of fatness-lessening in 06-04, so has adjusted his fitness goal proportionately- rationalizing that 250 miles wouldn't be THAT hard to rack up on his spiffy-keen 'Gazelle' glider, right? It's about the only machine his doctor would approve, so... here we go! Walka-walka-walka-walka....

nowhere manCarrie aimed for 500 miles in 2003, ended up only going about half-way. This has been pretty typical of her efforts to get fit. Since she's gotten used to doing half-assed exercise, her goal for 2004 is to end up with half the ass she has now. To lose weight and get firm, she's got two Going Nowhere goals: to do 50 hours of cardio classes or workout tapes, and 500 miles of walking/biking.

nowhere manChandos is STILL in the process of losing the pregnancy weight from her 7 year old son AND she's working on conceiving baby number two! She wants to be more active and healthy. She wouldn't mind dropping a few pounds either! (And she REALLY wants to do better than the 160 miles she logged last year!)

She's convinced that living in a warmer climate will make walking much easier than it was last year in the Midwest! Onward and upward!

nowhere manDave started the "Geek Diet" (counting calories on his Palm) in March, and has dropped about thirty pounds that way (and going from a 42 waist to a 36). Now, inspired by the idea that Walking Doesn't Necessarily Mean Walking Machines at the Gym, But What He Already Does a Bunch Of, he's wearing a pedometer everywhere. His original goal was to get a pro-rated 160 miles for the rest of the year -- but now he's shooting for walking all the way to 500 miles of nowhere by the end of the year! And he's made it!

nowhere manDenkar quit smoking on August 28, 2000 and within 5 months gained 50 pounds. In 2003 he started power walking and made it up to 5 miles a day before winter and darkness shut him down. He's lost 30 of those 50 pounds, and even though the holidays made him gain some back, he WILL be down to 150 by the end of 2004.

He's aiming to cover 1,000 miles as part of that goal. Miles to date: 202.5

nowhere manDoug is an obsessive 40-something who started bike riding in the fall of 2001 with his wife for fun. In 2002 he did over 800 miles and set a goal of 1,600 for 2003. He revised the goal in June shooting for 2,500. He finished 2003 with just over 2,600 miles. The goal for 2004 is 3,000 miles with 2 century rides (100 miles) and one month at 600+ miles.

Finished the year in fine style with 3,336 miles, one century ride and a 782 mile month...go July!!! Keeping the same goals for 2005 since it'll be tough to do more rides than I did in 2004 (which was somewhere around 110).

nowhere manDoyce has been unofficially Going Nowhere in fits and starts for most of 2003. At 250 lbs. (113.64 kilos for you metric people) in November 2002, he set to work on the elliptical at his local gym and one year later, had dropped down to 205 lbs. hanging of a 6'1" chassis (93 kilos; one of the reasons I don't like metric is because losing 45 pounds sounds like MORE). At any rate, it's the least he's weighed in 14 years and now he's aiming for his high-school football weight and getting in at least 500 miles on the elliptical machine (this time, he's going to keep track). He hit 500 on October 31, then took a break from the gym in November to start (and finish!) NaNoWriMo 2004, but now he's back at it during the holidays.

nowhere manElaine logged over five hundred miles in 2003, though she never got around to posting the results here. She got off to a weak start this year, due to bad weather and some minor physical problems, but hopes to start picking up the pace now. So far, she has logged a pathetic 22 miles as of February 18, but is determined to resume her normal 15 to 18 miles a week, with a goal of 700 miles in 2004.

As of 2004-02-27: 25 miles.

nowhere manEmma spent most of college trying really, really hard to look like a clothes hanger rather than a human being. She finally decided that she missed her boobs, hipbones are overrated, and life is too short to say no to chocolate. Now 24 and happily married, she's ready to start exercising again - this time with getting in shape and healthy as the main goals. She wouldn't be too upset if she lost about 10 pounds, though... ;-)

Goal for 2004: 500 miles, and the ability to run 5 miles at a 6 mph pace without stopping to walk. Thank goodness there's almost 10 months left!! Miles to date:

nowhere manThe Foofy Angel may be one of the youngest to join the 500 mile campaign. At 17 and Nine Months (as of Jan 1, 2004), she realizes that she needs to get off her bum and get moving! Seeing the many other members go (no)places has inspired her to pledge 500 miles running/biking/NordicTracking starting Jan. 1 2004 and running (yeah, I know, bad pun) through Dec. 31, 2004. Fight the Freshman Fifteen!!

Miles to date: as of January 2, 2004, she has biked an incredible 7 miles. Time to date: 30 minutes!

nowhere manFresh Linen's weight has steadily increased since she became the one in charge of her eating and activity habits at the age of 18. Now 36, that means that exactly half her life has been spent eating so-so foods, the only exercise being what comes naturally to a bookworm kid. The other half has been spent eating every single thing her heart desires, with her only exercise being trips to the refrigerator, and carrying around about 100 extra pounds.

Her goal for the next 18 years is to eat a nutritionally sound diet (but not go ON a diet), and get a reasonable amount of exercise. Her goal for the rest of this year though, is to be more aware of what she's eating, and do 500 miles on her Nordic Track and/or stationary bike. Miles to date:

nowhere manGardenqueen is tired of not liking what she sees in the mirror anymore. 500 miles to Nowhere seems apropos. A step and pedometer will be used. She hopes to go to China in September. It would be nice to be in good shape for the trip.

(mom also crying) well, recently Heather agreed to do another half marathon in august (with mother again), and was planning on doing tri-for-funs but decided to add another 1/2 marathon and not do the tri's. not enough time in a week for all this training.. joined the gym with a pool. got a personal trainer.

nowhere manUntil about five years ago, Jen was pretty active. But in the last five years, her work/life balance has gotten out of whack, and she has spent way too much time in the past half decade sitting on her (increasingly chubby) butt in front of a computer, working hard at being a workaholic. With a breast cancer diagnosis this past summer, and the subsequent treatment, she has decided to get her work/life balance back into whack, starting with increased dedication to daily exercise. To make sure she stays on track, she's signed up to do the Boston Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk. She needs to walk 60 miles over 3 days on that walk, so she's getting in gear now. She wants to lose approximately 50 pounds. She knows she can do it if she just keeps putting one foot in front of the other. Over and over again. Every day.

nowhere man After leaving her beloved town of Melbourne, Australia in search of adventure in London, juicyfruitz has fallen prey to the dreaded 'Heathrow Injection' - a combination of cold weather, lack of exercise, stodgy food and a party lifestyle means that most girls put on a couple of pounds when they land... After putting on a stone (eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek!) and losing any semblance of fitness that she once had, she's decided to take the challenge, get on a bike and pedal her way to health - and its a great opportunity to see more of her adopted country to boot! Because she's cycling she's decided that her goal will be 1000 miles. Thing is, growing up in a metric country means that she doesn't even know how far a mile is!

nowhere manKat aka The Feline One has no chance at all of running 500 miles per year into the darkest recesses of nowhere, but will damn well try. This will be accomplished - in glorious, glorious theory - via the vile, nefarious elliptical machine. And, if she gets bored, by building a huge hamster wheel and scampering along on all fours.

nowhere manKate, at 25, is trying to work her way to a slimmer healthier person. This lofty goal is somewhat foiled, however, by the fact that she hates exercise in all forms. However, in eight months time she's going to be a bridesmaid in a close friend's wedding and is determined to look smashing, or at least a good deal smaller.

She'll be walking dogs at the local humane society to meet her 500 mile goal and also provide some much needed companionship to all the pups waiting for permanant homes! Miles to date: 2.8

Nowhere manKath is attempting to get back on the bandwagon she keeps falling off of. In the land of ice and snow, she plans to start out 2004 with snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, and when mud season rolls around, she hopes to have a dog to walk. Last fall she joined a local walking club and strapped on the pedometer to record steps. The weekly sign-in and walk was a great motivator and the regular exercise banished a nasty case of plantar fasciitis (along with a simple pair of heel pads). So she hopes to join that group again when the roads are passable. 500 miles!! Let's see, that's how many steps? Mileage to date: 62!

Nowhere manKeri has decided to run her 1000 miles to nowhere. She has already been walking and running her way to fitness since February of 2003 when she began the quest to lower her cholesterol and blood pressure numbers. This run is dedicated to her husband, who battled (and beat!) a brain tumor in 2001, and is being done in conjunction with a fund-raiser to earn donations (she hopes) for the upcoming Relay for Life by the American Cancer Society in June of 2004. So she completed her first 500 miles (begun 11/01) on May 1, 2004! This was the fundraiser part! But please feel free to drop by the website and donate to her ACS Relay for Life team as she'll be collecting all through the Relay!

Now she continues with the second 500 through the end of the year!

Nacwolin, fully planning to tackle 750 miles this year, was totally sidetracked by a move halfway across the country and return to work to the tune of 40+ hours a week. Now work-free, she is trying to launch her comeback. Not having the beautiful people in San Diego to inspire her made working out and eating right seem pointless.

WELL, now at 130 lbs., she can't stand herself. She has no choice but to lose weight or move to Iceland, where she can wear ski gear year-round. Last spring she was running around 12 miles a week and had managed to get down to 122 lbs. She (and her trusty side-kick, Rachelle) WILL do that again. He's a real nowhere manLast year Paula rowed 820 miles or so, completing her goal here as well as a goal of 1,000,000 meters on the erg (rowing machine) alone -- that one included distance from the previous two years. Incidentally, she logged the greatest distance recorded on this page last year, and even though she realizes that this is only because Marn cheated by not logging her road miles at all (and so probably did really go farther) she is throwing down the gauntlet to all here, believing that a little friendly competition is a great motivator. Her real goal is to do a few more races this year and to do better in them; in pursuit of that and because she is nearly as crazy as Marn, she is shooting for a total of 1000 miles this year, combining rowing machine and real-water distance. Nowhere manFor Rachelle it all started when she moved to Japan almost 4 years ago. She was almost 160 lbs., a lot for someone who is only 5'2 so she began to do cardio and weight training 5 days a week and it worked! She got down to 127 and was thrilled but now has to get motivated again because she's at 135 and rising. She and her friend and fellow posse member, Paige, are inspiring each other to shed unwanted pounds before it's swimsuit time!

Nowhere manRune wants to enjoy her body again. Until 1999 she worked out regularly and was a fit, voluptuous 160 lbs. Then she met the love of her life, a geek whose laziness rivals Dave Barry's. With him, entropy set in. An increasingly sedentary life -- combined with greater indulgence in rich food and spirits -- amassed the pounds, depleted her energy, and made her feel 80 years old. Her mother's treatment for breast cancer in 2003 -- the same year Rune turned 40 -- inspired her to action. Rune would like to lose 40 lbs., but moreover she wants to develop an exercise habit and be healthy. She'll use a stationary bike and walk with her nifty new pedometer to achieve 500 miles this year.

nowhere manSarah has certainly been exposed to both healthy eating (thanks to her mom) and regular exercise habits (college v-ball and frisbee), but that was six to eight years ago. She decided sometime in January to become healthy again, this time for herself--on purpose, even. So far, through a support pact with her roommate, she's managed to succeed for two whole months. She is astounded, I mean, very proud.

Anyway, she and the roommate registered for the New York 3 Day Walk for Breast Cancer on August 6-8, and this is where the goal comes in. To avoid being scraped off the Manhattan pavement in disgrace, Sarah will walk or engage in equivalent activities for 500 miles between now (March 15) and August 9, 2004. Oh! And if you can spare a bit of sponsorship, email her, and she'll tell you how.

nowhere manAfter completing the half-marathon last year, Shanna became addicted to walking, but found it hard to keep going once the Portland, Ore. rains hit. Between a sit-at-her-desk day job and her love of soy mochas, she figures she'd better just buy a rain coat and keep on moving. Her goal is to walk, swim and bike 1,000 miles to nowhere (and to a healthy future) in 2004. And, in February, she made the...silly? dangerous? slightly insane?...decision to walk the Portland marathon in October. Eek!

Miles as of June 29: 400 Yah! I laid an egg :) Ten percent there rubber duck. Ten percent there rubber duck. And some ducks too :)

nowhere manSpins is a twenty-something Mom with career in tow, and hasn't devoted the time to fitness that she'd have liked to in, oh...twenty-some years. She's looking forward to eliptical trainer-ing her way to 500 miles in 2004.

nowhere manStacy hiked 100 miles in Yellowstone last July and hasn't moved from the couch since! Pregnant and determined to stay healthy she's walked 1.8 miles so far and hopes Going Nowhere will give her an incentive to walk after the baby comes as well.

nowhere manTamsin just turned thirty and spent her whole life walking and still ended up back where she began with nothing. She has decided to record this epic journey to see if it is actually doing her any good or if it is just her excuse not to do any real exercise

She averages about six miles a day just walking to Union Street and back, which totals about 2100 mile a year so she's signing up for 1000 and intends to triple it just by wandering about Aberdeen housing estates in the rain.

nowhere manTommy is Jacque's twin brother and Uncle to fellow Posse member Paige. He has no wife, and no children, but two fish. He quit smoking 12 years ago, but still needs to lose 50 lbs, down to 150 lbs. In the Army, he ran 15 miles every day but doesn't run any more, though he did start walking at least 4 miles every day. He is going to Durango Colorado wilderness backpacking over the 4th Of July holiday so he must be in shape. He will be doing a major serious regime as of now.

Tommy's Miles to date: 30

nowhere manBefore becoming pregnant seven years (almost eight) ago, Tracy was a nice size 3. After said pregnancy ended, she was a very unbecoming size 14 and still is. Size 14 does not look nice on a 5'0 frame. With five kids (some foster, some her forever kids) Tracy wants to take time to do something for herself.

She hopes to lose about 30-40 pounds, but mostly, wants to start walking and have a goal. She has always wanted to go to Graceland which is 844 miles from her home, so that's her walking goal.

A hinky ankle has forced her to switch to aerobics. Hours to date: 6

nowhere manValerie is a fitness-wannabe, but has to fight against a personal procrastination problem. She feels that this will be a fun way to be clocking up the miles and gain support. She plans to walk, swim and cycle her way to 500 miles - maybe more - in 2004.

Miles to date: 41 miles.

Nowhere manVicki was one of the original posse members and more than met last year's goal. She believes that keeping track here is fun, and often gives her the motivation to walk just one more minute, to get those miles up. Plus she really thinks that the support here is amazing. This year she's aiming for 700 miles and even though she got a slow start, she is determined to make it. So far she has covered: 146.70
